Artist Statement

The sheer ease with which we can produce a superficial image often leads to creative disaster.

As a photographer, I am dedicated to the amount of detail that has to be put into a work of art. Unlike the newer breed of photographers, I grew up with film and spent many, many hours in the darkroom and mostly on a single print. Digital imaging is still very new, and I am still dedicated to using mostly film. I feel that to fully grasp the realm of photography, a full knowledge of film and the history of photography are required. If an artist does not know the history of their field/medium, how are they to know how to make art better? If you don't know where you have been, how will you know where to go?

I feel that the quality just isn't there yet, and I will not put my name on any photograph that does NOT reach my rigorous standards. I also think that Photoshop and digital image editing software is the double-edged sword that will ruin photography. While I use Photoshop, and it is a great tool, too many photographers use it as a crutch, to fix major problems. I practice photojournalism ethics, and only use Photoshop to do basic editing such as dust/scratch removal, and exposure correction in the case of poorly scanned film.
